School buildings once designated as “white” opened their doors to Black students. The integration process, which deeply divided the city, was led by four first-grade girls. Tessie Prevost, Leona Tate and Gail Etienne were the first Black students to attend the McDonogh 19 School. Ruby Bridges was assigned to the previously all-white William Frantz Public School. Newspapers worldwide ran photographs of the girls walking past protesters and entering the schools accompanied by federal marshals. Historical Society of Central Florida BY JERALD PODAIR PROFESSOR OF HISTORY LAWRENCE UNIVERSITY Mose Norman , a Black registered voter, was ready to cast his ballot for presidential candidate Warren G. Harding. But when he arrived at his polling place on Election Day, Nov. 2, 1920, in the orange grove town of Ocoee, Florida, near Orlando, Norman was turned away by white election officials because of supposed unpaid poll taxes. His name and the names of hundreds of other registered Black voters had been removed from the rolls by white poll workers. The Black voters were told that only the notary public could verify their registrations, and he was out of town. When Norman and the other Black voters protested, the poll workers physically kicked them out of the building. The racial tension only got worse as the day went on. BY RAGINI SHAH CLINICAL PROFESSOR OF LAW, SUFFOLK UNIVERSITY With U.S. voters across the political spectrum strongly concerned about border security , presidential candidates Kamala Harris and Donald Trump have been trying to one-up each other on who can reduce migration at the nation’s southern border fastest and most effectively. Trump’s rhetoric is more extreme: He’s called the U.S. a “dumping ground” and promises to order mass deportations of 11 million undocumented immigrants if elected. But on border policy , Trump and Harris have remarkably similar positions: They want to send more money, Border Patrol agents and technology to the U.S.-Mexico border. These ideas may sound reasonable enough. Yet, as my research on the history of border enforcement reveals, flooding the zone with funding, law enforcement and technology will not necessarily make the border safer. Jones, who died on Nov. 3, 2024 , at the age of 91, transformed our understanding of musical arrangement. His work spanned decades and genres, from jazz and pop to hip-hop and film scoring. He worked with pop icons like Michael Jackson, Frank Sinatra, Ray Charles and Aretha Franklin, and also collaborated with lesser-known artists such as Lesley Gore and Tevin Campbell. They designed checks and balances to guard against the accumulation of power they had found when studying ancient Greece and Rome. I work at the intersection of artmaking and academic research. I write music as part of a greater effort to challenge antiquated ideas about learning, teaching and expertise . But I assume the awkwardness in conversations about work is related to stereotypes of hip-hop culture. Among many , one of those assumptions is that hip-hop is only made for and by young people. One group of voters’ dreams are dashed, while another set of voters see their hopes realized. Every election is also unique. The United States has had some critical presidential elections that reshaped the way Americans think about politics. Election officials were able to quickly remedy the problem but not before accusations began to spread online , primarily among Democrats, that the Republican secretary of state had purposefully left Harris off the ballot. This false rumor emerged from a common pattern: Some people view evidence such as good-faith errors in election administration through a mindset of elections being untrustworthy or “rigged,” leading them to misinterpret that evidence. Like other ethnic nationalities in the USA, the Igbo Diaspora consists of peoples from all walks of life separated by everything and only united by the fact that they are all Igbo.
