GCTF Seminar on the Judiciary in Handling Counterterrorism Cases within a Rule of Law Framework

 The U.S. Department of State, together with the U.S. Judicial Conference Committee on International Judicial Relations, will host a seminar on the Role of the Judiciary in Handling Counterterrorism Cases within a Rule of Law Framework on November 14-15, 2013 at the U.S. Department of State, in Washington, D.C. This event, being organized under the auspices of the Global Counterterrorism Forum’s (GCTF) Criminal Justice Sector Working Group, will be the first in a series of activities over the next twelve months and will culminate in the development of a series of non-binding good practices in the field.

This two-day seminar will examine the critical issues and complexities that judges have to address when handling national security, counterterrorism, and associated complex criminal cases. This workshop will allow the participants from different regions and legal systems to share experiences, challenges, good practices, and lessons learned in handling these cases. More than 25 judges and magistrates from around the world – including from Algeria, Bangladesh, Canada, China, France, Indonesia, Israel, Jordan, Kenya, Malaysia, Morocco, The Netherlands, Nigeria, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, and the United States – are expected to attend.
