Prof. Dies Watching Nigeria-Ethiopia Match
2014 FIFA World Cup Final qualifying series - Apparently overcome by
his passion for the beautiful game, a Nigerian academic died while
watching the Nigeria/Ethiopia World Cup qualifying match on television
on Sunday, the local Nation newspaper reported Tuesday.
It said Michael Filani, Emeritus Professor of Transport Planning and Development at the University of Ibadan (UI), slumped and died while watching the game at his residence in the city.
The deceased, who was a former deputy Vice-Chancellor of Uuniversity of Ibadan, was said to be "radiant and agile" in his last public outing before watching the match, which Nigeria won 2-1.
PANA reported that tension was high all through the match in which a fast-paced Ethiopia scored first, before Nigeria rallied to equalize and win.
The two-leg playoff is that last hurdle to cross for the 10 African teams that remain in contention for the five slots reserved for the continent at the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil, with aggregate winners qualifying for the finals.
