Among some ethnic groups in Nigeria, it is compulsory for every newborn to be given tribal marks. The specific pattern of cuts on the face or body identifies the newborn’s family heritage. But these days, the tradition is declining owing to health campaigns against the practice and the existence of children's rights legislation.
